Reply with quote | #1 | A person identifying himself with a badge numbered "001" (improbable, at least) and flipping an ID rather too fast to see clearly, and not willing to display it except briefly, using the last name "Amirfaryar" (seemingly, a rather common Persian surname), but whose prenom was not visible long enough to be copied, appeared at our door yesterday. He was not, of course, admitted. He had no warrant and he had no prior appointment and so on. He was also offensive, arrogant and rather taken with himself — not something one wants to tolerate in public employees.
I seem to recall this name having shown up in connection with similar incidents in one of the forums here. I'd be glad to have accounts of this man's behavior; I am building a file to follow up my already-sent complaint to Commissioner Farley.

Reply with quote | #4 | I googled dohmh and what I got is this -http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/episrv/episrv-faq-chs.shtml - it appears to be to do with the department of health's epidemiology department (whatever that is). I suspect you were right not to admit this person - in fact, I suggest that next time a character like that appears - don't even open the door but call the police immediately.

I have talked to people I know who were health dept. inspectors; they do not recall a person of that name.

Don, this is an obvious attempt to gain access into your home. With all that is going on today like the incident at Fort Hood one can't be to careful. Never let in any strangers no matter what identification he or she may show you. Something like this once happened to one of my neighbors and she was lucky enough to keep a baseball bat right next to her door. He tried pushing his way into her front door and she had the sense to get the bat and strike him right over his head and split it open. She called the police and it took them almost fifteen minutes to arrive while all the rest of her neighbors including me held him down. As it turned out he was one of her ex husbands friends and was looking to do her harm. The next day her ex was also arrested as well.
Always be very careful Concerned

Reply with quote | #9 | Some elaborating details missing I think, in this post. When you say showed up "at our door," are you referring to your private home or some animal sanctuary establishment?
I'd suppose if it's your home that one of your friendly neighbors is disgruntled about you having some animals that they don't approve of and so they called this Agency that then sent this man. Are these the details we're supposed to fill in for ourselves? In any case, what did this surly gentleman ask you or say to you?

Reply with quote | #10 | Yes, this post causes me to ask more questions as well. Why would someone want access to your home? Did you call 911? Forgive me for not knowing who you are because I am not here often nor regularly, but do you have a reason for the Dept. of Health to inspect your premises?
Sounds like a potential home invasion/robbery and I would've called the police. They at least should know someone in the area is using this ruse to try to gain access.

Well, of course, lots of details; easiest answers to all your, hmn, interests are found, I suppose, in the complaint I sent the commissioner. You can read it at http://www.jenner.org/djenner/archive/DHMHFarley11-6-09.pdf. Undoubtedly, I have disgruntled neighbors; I am quite capable of telling you the origins of their problems in personal interest and an illicit, morally relativistic notion that their particular value-totalities are the only right value-totalities. [Don't get me started on this; if you are really interested, you can read a few random remarks put together for a graduate seminar I lead in professional ethics: http://www.jenner.org/djenner/archive/ValueRelativismRightAction.html. Bottom line, most of us think our embodied, particular values are Really Spiffy, and everyone else's value systems suck to the extent they don't concur with ours, and we'll leave them alone, maybe, so long as our own personal systems aren't offended. We might even send them to, er, camp....]
The question is, has anyone — in the city, clearly — encountered this putative inspector with the implausible badge number? He's a fairly elderly gent, and with that badge number, one would assume he's been around awhile. But no one I know with city health dept. background seems to have heard of him and he has no visible record.

Reply with quote | #12 | Have you tried calling 311 and asking if they can identify a DOHMH officer by the badge number? Maybe they can give you contact info for the Dpt of Health officers badge numbers?

Faramarz Amirfaryar is a DOHMH inspector. He is more easygoing than the other inspectors, I do not have their names right now, but DOHMH sent him because your neighbor called 311. He generally will not give any violations while the others do. He may only give a warning. You do not have to let them in, but if you have nothing to hide, it is better to show him and he won't come again if he finds nothing. It's up to you. But it's your neighbor who is the enemy. Amirfaryar is just doing his job. He is a little quirky. I do not know if he is Persian or not. |
